Wednesday Item Feature: Notebooks for summer school

Finals are being finished, kids are graduating, and summer is here! I remember taking summer classes during college and how much more relaxed I felt during the sunny days. Maybe all that extra Vitamin D helped me get through Art History and Web Design summer courses.

But, even now that I’m out of school, I still find myself collecting and browsing notebooks. I just love these things! And I don’t know why, because I don’t have too much use for them.

If you love notebooks like me, or you actually need one, Bernee from Oakland (owner of Bylee Design on Etsy) has some really nicely put together small black notebooks. If you’re still in school or have a kid in school, this package contains two notebooks, one with a ruler design on the cover and one with an envelope-size-reference design.

These are great to have. The pages are thicker than standard notebooks (acid free recycled 70lb paper) and contain blank pages for artists and aspiring artists out there. Or you can draw in your own lines if you need them!

As a designer myself and knowing Bernee as another designer out there, these books are fantastic!

Check out Bernee’s listing on Etsy now: Black & White Notebook Set of 2, bylee Ruler Notebook!

Wednesday Item Feature: Bake a scarf

Did I say bake a scarf? I totally meant bake a pie or maybe I meant make a scarf. Or both.

Summertime is approaching, but that doesn’t mean knitwear and yarns are something to ignore! Michele from Oakland, owner of Misfit Yarns & Crafts on Etsy, sells her own handspun and hand-dyed yarns and handmade knitwear.

I met Michele once at a local EBAC craft fair in Oakland last year and watched her handle her spindle gracefully behind her table and make cream colored yarn out of fibers. It was entrancing, and she was quite friendly!

Her “berry pie” colored yarn is available for sale on Etsy — and although it’s red-white-and-purple, the combination still looks good enough to make something in time for July 4th. In any case, berry pie sounds delicious and with 90 yards of this wool, you could whip up something delicious yourself that would last longer than a freshly baked pie on your windowsill: perhaps a summer scarf!

DK weight and great for needles size 5 to 7, this is a perfect handspun yarn to pick up and be creative with for yourself, your kids, your friends, someone else’s kids, or whoever!

Wednesday Item Feature: Roses or wine?

I love finding detailed pendants! Arhyonel from Orinda — owner of Arhyonel Designs, a jewelry shop on Etsy — creates details pieces of jewelry that are lovely in their colors and in their craftsmanship.

When I first saw this Rose Lattice Pendant, my eyes lingered for a bit. This necklace is as delicious as it is beautiful. From the thumbnail, at first I thought these were bunches of tiny grapes on a silver fence-like backing; when I zoomed in on the listing, I realized they were flowers and leaves woven out of tiny garnets, moss agate, and metallic seed beads!

Hanging from a 17″ black Green leather cord, this pendant comes in a gift box ready to be presented to a friend, a mother, or someone you love (or for yourself if you love it)!

Wednesday Item Feature: Rain, rain, go away

This past Saturday, a group of EBAC members gathered at Sticky Art Lab and Berkeley and set up their items and sat around with wine, cheese, and live music from a local guitarist. If you didn’t make it out, you missed it. But! We’ll do it again some time soon, perhaps.

Dawn, who runs DawnKathrynStudio on Etsy, had some of her items out for sale but also had a live screen-printing demos for those who stopped by to say hello. As immersed as ever in her art, she has some of her own cool screen-printed items up for sale on Etsy.

Her tote bags are handy to have — for groceries, other shopping, carrying schoolbooks, or just an every day bag. Although it’s now May, a little rain still comes by here and there, especially in San Francisco. This April Showers Girl tote bag is a cute item to carry around for Spring (and Summer, Fall, and Winter, too!).

Monthly Positive Dose: Women Entrepreneurs

Wednesday Item Feature: Flowers for Mother’s Day

Spring brings an abundance of flowers and, naturally, lots of beautiful sights! I find myself hesitating to buy real flowers for the home since they die off, and I typically forget to do something lasting with them like flatten and frame them or something cool like that, so I love finding living things that have been preserved and made into something much more lasting.

Melody from San Francisco — owner of Isobell Jewelry on Etsy — sells “wild and pretty” things. Not wildly crazy like a rock concert, but wildly pretty in a more literal sense; these California Wild Flower Stud Earrings feature flowers she has handpicked from her own backyard! The pink and yellow of the petals seep into each other, gorgeously preserved to rest on your earlobes.

Measuring at 12mm, these studs have silver plated posts with butterfly backs and would be a perfect gift for Mother’s Day!
